Several days back I was in the hospital, my sister were about to give a birth to her second child. As I was really tired and sleepy (it was around 3.30 am and I barely sleep -1 or 2 hours perhaps) something interesting and tempting happened inside that hospital.
After the nurse was checking out my sister, apparently my sister had to stay overnight in the hospital so they can monitor the development of the baby and the mother. So, my brother in law and I went down stairs to see the nice lady in the receptionist. We had to fill in some administration form and.. well, of course pay the down payment.
I was just accompanying my brother while he was taken care of all things that need to be done. After he discussed with the receptionist about the room and the payment, he handed in the insurance card. Then the nice lady asked us to wait, I am sorry, sir, I have to swap the card to check the balance in the next room. could you wait here for a second? It won’t be long.
Yeah, we don’t mind..
And then a magical thing happened. I wasn’t sleepy anymore after I took a small peek to her PC’s monitor. It came quite shock to me that the nice receptionist lady did not lock the computer. I could easily guess that the PC was running on Windows XP and the application in which she was filling in my sister data was using Internet Explorer, therefore it was a web based apps. I could see the blank form for the patients and I could see all the menus which one of them was the one that can retrieve the patient’s data. What an amazing view I had there in front of me, and really tempted to do something bad! But I didn’t do anything with her computer because she was really nice to us. As a matter of fact, at some point we might be helping her guarding the room that morning -No one was there, for crying out loud!!
So, Lesson Learned:
Please be advised that if you are about to leave your computer unattended, make sure you locked it first before leaving the room. It’s not that hard to lock the computer, especially if you are using Windows Operating System. All you have to do is just pressing the Window button + L on your keyboard and everything would be set. In Linux environment, I suppose Lock the screen would be the option to do the same thing (I am a Ubuntu user, not sure in any other distro).
